Links I Love: Miami Bloggers

new city, means new media contacts to a pr girl - more than ever have I been getting familiar with the local news desk producers, magazines, editors, reporters, and above all  - the food, event and fashion blogs. I'm definitely a blogger girl as most bloggers tend to review items, events and restaurants you might have never heard of. I even won a valentine's day giveaway from The Architect of Style on The Wordy Girl and experience food through Fat Girl Hedonist's instagram.

So here is a list of my favorite local blogs, sites, igs:

Everything Going On In Miami - THE 305
(music, gossip, events, fashion, sports - i mean, EVERY-THING! about miami life)

Fashion Blog - NANY'S CLOSET
(my absolute favorite miami fashion blogger. not only do i go their for style ideas but i've ombred my hair bc of her videos. in addition, it is the BEST looking blog - aesthetically speaking)

Miami Deals - GILT CITY MIAMI
(the last PR firm I worked with, ran a food & wine coupon here and since then, I've missed the opportunity to buy coupons to miami style mafia and and international polo club palm beach - so move fast!)

Fashion Blog - THE ARCHITECT OF STYLE
(i used to have 2 blogs but eventually combined both of the blogspots. when i was trying to figure out a name for one of them it was something along the lines of "Architect Stalker" - i don't even remember, i was never too fond of the name. BUT i am fond of this blog, it's also where i won my illustration from. she covers fashion, home decor and definitely check out her illustrations)

Places - MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT
(I prefer their IG - I found their website as the last food & wine event I worked was hosted at the Moore Building)

Fashion Blog - THE WORDY GIRL
(yet another accomplished social media maven. i actually read her blog, it's real and funny)

Places - TRENDY SPOTS MIAMI
(I discovered them on Latina stylist, Irma Martinez's IG. I'm getting to know a lil Miami dets and new lifestyle spots)

Fashion Blog - OJ AND CIGS
(stylist, former new york, and former DJ - hip)

Fashion Stylist - IRMA MARTINEZ
(constantly traveling but Miami based stylist, Irma is a must-IG-follow)

Store - MIAMI STYLE MAFIA
(They don't update their Facebook, so follow up their IG. i don't remember how i first found out about them but it was way before all their press. i think they posted an internship opportunity and thought their showroom/store/pieces and general concept was dope and an upgrade for the miami girl's closet)

Fashion Blog - LIVING IN COLOR PRINT
(runner-up on my fashion blog favorites and a pr girl as well)

Food - FAT GIRL HEDONIST
(again, i found this blog when i was researching special guests for the food & wine event i worked. i highly recommend her IG)

Fashion Blog - ELECTRIC BLOGARELLA
(if i could my list would include Daily Candy Miami - and this blogger was one of the main editors. RIP DC. but her blog is pretty good as well)

Networking - MIAMI MEDIA MIXER
(my best guy friend sent me the invite to their last networking event at batch. and since then, have told everyone about it. perfect social events to meet people in the industry.)

Fashion Blog - THE FASHION POET
(voted Miami's fashion blogger for 2013. not only does she dress herself but she has the cutest kid model. perfect! now i know where to shop for my unborn miami girl)

Store - BLUSH BOUTIQUE
(just noticed some of these bloggers have been dressing a tiger dress from this miami store. good thing, they are literally around the corner from me bc I never have anything to wear ;) locations: palmetto, brickell, south miami, miami beach, etc)

Fashion Blog - COLLECTIONS AND VOLUMES
(i literally just found this blog. obsessed.)

Words of Wisdom from Fashion Business Women

my constant pursuit is to find my dream fashion PR job in new york and thanks to my mother, best friends, pr mentor, and everyday reading - i know i am just a few steps closer to that dream. a class at INCAE called personal innovation took me to italy, a PR class at Polimoda brought me to NY and a few internships have taken me for quite a ride. i'm getting closer. i know it. but sometimes you just have bad days and that's when i open up my Kelly Cutrone books, watch Kell on Earth reruns, and read not just positive pinterest notes on life but life stories from the women who I want to be.

Yesterday, I bookmarked Marie Claire's Power of Presence luncheon article by Refinery 29  and found these words of wisdom:

"For me, personally, I don’t want to hire anyone that has to fit into any box," says Roy. "And if I sense that in an interview, I won’t hire them even if they are immensely talented because I want to work with people who come with new ideas, think outside the box, push boundaries."

"Be persistent. If you’re scared, pretend that you’re not," advises Rebecca Minkoff,

Nina Garcia, who was just recently announced the new creative director of Marie Claire. "One thing we all took out of this is you got to stand your ground and you can’t compromise,"

The biggest hardship," she adds, "is when people are competitive, when people are not nice. Again, find your sense of dignity and power, and carry on and don't let that negativity get to you, because that can distract you, disturb you, and that’s not you."

- -
the industry is tough but i'm pretty tough as well. i was here for 9 months in 2010/11, went back home for another 9 months but came back and i've already been here for almost 9 months again. it's all about dedication, persistence, and love - i can't see myself doing anything else but pr. life isn't easy, nyc isn't easy and jobs don't fall from the sky but that's why you gotta keep your head up, ignore the negativity and keep going. i know i will be just like them one day and hope to pass the message along.

- -
'work hard, play hard'
- -

my other sources for words of wisdom or pr fun are.
every time i read their stories, i think 'True Story'.

- -

misc.
this graph was also included in the refinery 29 story and i thought it was great. besides confidence, determination, and hardwork - appearance matters!

The Final Chapter: She Works in Fashion

I started this blog back in 2009 for fun, for me, for my friends and family to join me through my application process for grad school, move to Italy, grad school in Italy and Italian life. It showcased my ups and downs in love, family, friends, and school. It was a public diary that was loved by many and hated (but secretly loved) by others. I never meant to hurt anyone or myself but sometimes that's exactly what it did.

It's June 2012. Its been 31 months. and my life has changed every 9 months. Thanks to the Young Executives Program at Incae Costa Rica, I decided not to attend Incae and get my Masters in Fashion Management in Italy. I spent an amazing 9 months in Italy, met an incredible group of international girls, and traveled Europe on my own. As amazing those 9 months were, Europe just wasn't for me and my Italiano was not perfetto enough for me to land an internship (either way internship season was during summer vacation and I much spent el verano mas feliz de mi vida con mis viejos). While my parents and I were lounging at my Florentine apartment overlooking Santa Croce, I interviewed via skype for what would now be my first public relations internship for Shout Social (now known as Sacasa Media). A start-up PR firm spearheaded by entrepreneur and now friend, Nazira Sacasa. Thanks to her, I moved to The City and began my adventure in Fashion PR. At Shout Social, I learned how to pitch, communicate with editors, learned the importance of paper presentation, and landed my first media placement for Essence. By the time I end this internship (which was for graduate school credit) it's December 2010 and I had been away from home, family and friends for a year. At the same time, Nicaraguan designer, Shantall Lacayo returned to Nicaragua after an exhausting little project called Project Runway Latin America. December was all about me asking my family for a little financial help in order to intern a couple more months in New York so I could land a decent job AND networking with Shantall. Fortunately, I was successful. My family supported my dream and Shantall read my email from thousands of emails to be her social media intern. Back in New York, I took a second public relations internship for my resume, an internship I think I have badmouthed a little too much but an internship that also taught me too much. I took a second internship because my resume compared to local FIT and Parson students was shit - and as the Social Media Director at my second internship said "pffffff you have a Masters? that means nothing in the fashion industry". She was right. It will give you a little VA-VA-VOOM but "can you pitch, be a bitch, and handle fashion pr?"  Factory PR taught me, the power of social media, the long hours you put in for passionate writing, top notch events, and media placements. They were the typical NY/Fashion/PR/Internship Nightmare/Internship Dream/Glitzy Side/Dark Side all wrapped in one! My resume now reads "head intern' because I was one of the few interns that stayed till 2am breaking down mannequins, boxing them, and carrying them to storage. I gave them sweat, blood, and tears all in the name of public relations - and I loved every second of it (well maybe 50 of those seconds, ha! you know what I mean). My term there, ended because of a fall-out I had with an undermining younger (paid) assistant who didn't know how to talk to interns. A few weeks later, a job was offered. but because of my own pride, it went down the drain.

[Sometimes in life, things just have a funny way of working out]

Right around here, we hit the summer of 2011 and I am unemployed and anxious. My grad friends all have jobs but me. They all have jobs at Tom Ford, DVF, Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger, and I'm unemployed. I applied to jobs for about four months and decided I had enough and needed family. I'm not going to go into detail but around this time, my personal life changed forever and I ended up moving back to Nicaragua.

I tried not to drown in my sorrows, went to a couple prayer groups, made some new friends, traveled and kept busy with Shantall as her PR Manager. When I moved to Nicaragua, I always said, it would never be for more than a year. so I bought a ticket and moved back to New York, 9 months later. right before my move, I applied to jobs like crazy and once I was here, I had at least 3 interviews a week. it has been 2 months since my move to New York, it's now June 2012 and I landed a job in fashion! I am an E-commerce Marketing Assistant for ........ ;) I think I've shared enough. hehehe.

[Sometimes in life, things just have a funny way of working out]

thanks to my internships, Shantall, my family, my friends, and GOD I am right where I am supposed to be. I know I am! thank you all who have been on this journey with me. i couldn't have done it without you. it has been two years. two very long anxious, scary, tiring years. i seriously don't want to see my resume, mediabistro, or another interviewer for a very very long time. this blog has now come to an end. thank you. best, alicia beatrice.

Event Style : Expo Mujer y Arte 2012

Stylists, Mariu Lacayo & Norma Gomez
and yours truly
not the best picture, but we looked great

RAWR! Leopard Print Shoes!
Open Toe or Peep Toe?

Nicaraguan Artist and one of the 22 female painters to show at Expo Mujer y Arte 2012, Maria Reneé Perez, looking timelessly chic in pastel bow-tied pumps, linen midi skirt, classic white blouse, velvet black blazer accessorized with a pearl necklace and multicolored snakeskin clutch.

Get to know Maria Reneé Perez in this week's edition of Nosotras for La Prensa Nicaragua.

Photo Below: Las Amigas by Maria Reneé Perez

Side Note:
It's pretty amazing how art, music, design, and fashion all wrap into one or in this case, end up at the same event.

Fashion Stylist and Boutique Owner, Mariu Lacayo's mother - Mariu F. de Lacayo was the former manager of Ponte Vecchio and has been a noted artist and fashionista.

Maria Reneé Perez's son is sneaker-holic, DJ Killa Ka5 - who's also gifted in graffiti art.

Designer, Vicente Castellon was also spotted at the event and is also highly-recognized by his drawing skills from his fellow peers. In fact, Castellon hails from a family of artists as is designer, Shantall Lacayo. Vicente's father is a fountain pen drawer and Shantall's father is a well-known artist, Julio Quintero and her mother, Lauren Lacayo runs her own art gallery, Génesis.

My mother and award-winning abstract artist, Alicia Castrillo is definitely a risk-taker and loves color. Therefore, I've been trying to convince her to pull off some bold color-blocking and she did..raspberry red and arctic blue.

Did we inherit the artsy fashionista gene?

Editor Behavior

welcome to part two, again you will find me to be a tad displeased about a certain issue i have faced while living in Nicaragua. in short, fashion ignorance.

STORY TWO : EDITORS

again, i will remind you that moving back to Nicaragua has been a tough experience but one i try to make the most out of. therefore, right before i moved back i started emailing print media (newspapers and magazines) my resume and cover letter in order to perhaps snatch or propose a fashion critique, street style columnist or blogger position ala Bill Cunningham or Cathy Horyn.

to quickly give you an idea of (fashion o non-fashion) print media in nicaragua, it consists of 2 mass newspapers, 4 secured magazines, and 3 new magazines. right off, the back, LET ME WARN YOU RIGHT NOW, this will offend you....THE WORST nicaraguan magazines are 2 new ones, Stilo and JetSet. What a ripoff! I think we can all collect our favorite pieces from Net-A-Porter and fashion week, looks from the Oscars, interview our cool friends, and google our horoscope,  put them together in powerpoint, add fun font, click print and BOOM i got a magazine! One editor is a tomboy and another just shops online - just because you can put words and pictures together does not make you a fashion editor.
anyways, i tried and tried to reach out to the other print media but was left unheard. the one editor that interviewed me, wanted me as their magazine blogger which was a great idea but unfortunately magazines here sell at $3-$5 and i was at least asking for $250 (yep! $250. nothing!) i eventually received an email stating "we have no budget". oh well. on to the next.

i may have not snagged a cute a little column but i'm sure i have more readers on this blog (+15,000 visitors, +124 countries worldwide) (wassssssup?) than these other media outlets. oh! and i can use foul language!! yeahhh man! always a plus!

DEAR FASHION WRITERS :
What bothers me about not being considered for a writing position at these newspapers or magazines is the fact that their fashion writers AREN'T even living in nicaragua! one guy is a has-been designer, another is a former miss nicaragua, and other people with no fashion knowledge at all! and don't even get me started on how most magazines just splash the pages with high society pictures of the same people! hellooooooooooo, 1% 'rich' 99% poverty level!

for example, yesterday an editor ended an article on a charity event on a sour note because she was bored of the same collection pieces from 2 distinguished Nicaraguan designers.

"Otras de las colecciones que se presentaron en el evento no aportaron estilos novedosos. Fue más de lo que ya habíamos apreciado en otras pasarelas, nos quedaron a deber ingenio y creatividad." ---> (translation) "while the other collections presented at the event lacked new styles. it's best to even say, we have already seen these pieces at other shows, owing us ingenuity and creativity."

why does this bother me? because i can't stand fashion ignorance and i will explain it as simple as possible.

HOMEWORK
DESIGNER: An amazing struggling fashion designer doesn't have a fancy lifestyle and lives at poverty line for the beginning of their career. It's a career made up of tears, sweat, impatience, stress, and tons of fabric. It's a career that takes time, dedication, hard work and above all passion. As this person grows at some financial point, they are given a chance to dream up a harmonious collection which can consist of 15 - 50 pieces.

COLLECTIONS: The collections are broken down by season and debuted on certain dates.
- Fall / Winter
- Spring / Summer
- Resort
- Cruise
- Haute-Couture

SALES / PRESS : Once the collections are exhibited, they are pitched for press and eventually sold on certain dates.

therefore, dear editor, why must you critique these talented emerging designers and their collections? if you wanted to see something new, head on over to forever 21, h&m or zara - fast fashion. Fast Fashion is a term given to brands who deliver different pieces each week, month and do not work on specific inspiration or look but are driven by sales and trends; while real designers SET trends and are DRIVEN by the love of what they do best, DESIGN.

What Fashion People Do

What I think I do? Both of these sheets display images of the 'Miranda Priestly" in the Devil Wears Prada. In my case, I ain't "THE BOSS" yet. So what do I think do? I think they should show pictures of interns and assistants busting their asses like "Andy Sachs" from the Devil Wears Prada. My friends also always link me to the Devil Wears Prada....the correct answer, I've been interning and working in PUBLIC RELATIONS with a side of BLOGGING! I basically write emails all day to event coordinators, MY BOSS (designer Shantall Lacayo), stylists, editors, update social media platforms, create marketing and sales strategies and when fashion week or event comes along - what doesn't happen? IT'S A JOB. A TOUGH JOB. I may be online all freakin' day but I'm working and getting shit done. i'm seriously sick of people thinking i'm just flipping through magazines, blogs, or dress to the T ... cause i'm actually working on press clippings, creating a blogger network, and not currently wearing all black and no makeup #justsayin

These parodies are tooooo hilarious, I watch them over and over and see myself and friends in them, how bad is that?

StyleStalker : Nicaraguan DJ KILLA KA5

I asked 4 guys friends of mine (the ones I consider to be the most fashionista and Nicaraguan) if they could answer a few questions for me. I swear every time we upload a picture or mention 'Nicaraguan fashion' - there's a roll of + 40 comments.

When it comes to really making it from the bottom to the top of the DJ world, my friend DJ KILLA KA5 is definitely on his way UP UP n AWAY as an open format dj that has rocked private events for the San Antonio Spurs, Puma, Nike, and many more from Texas to Miami to his home, Nicaragua. killaka5 is considered the future of Miami, with his fusion of styles and ability to always stay fresh and current. Much like his professional life, killaka5's approach to dressing is carefully planned out and perfectly executed - here's his take on fashion, style, and Nicaraguan culture.

Describe your Style:

i would say im a product of my environment. im not your typical person, and obviously not your typical NICA. Ive been very involved in the streetwear scene for all my life, and seen fashion and styles evolve. From the baggy jeans and XXL tshirts, to cut off jeans and tank tops. I'm also very into high end fashion, i follow brands like Gucci, YSL, Versace, Prada, etc. Visit many blogs and sites. I take all that in and make it into my own. Always sticking to myself and staying away from the expected and predictable. I consider myself and elitist at times, yes i am that guy that says i wore this before they did, or see someone wearing something, and i dont wear it anymore. I dunno to me it takes out the  originality of it. during 06-08 there was a big "streetwear revolution" where brands came out and went all out, like everything it crumbled and now theyre all very simple and minimalist.

I would say thats where im at now. i dress pretty simple, mainly grey/black v necks, here and there ill wear a shirt with a logo or design, if not ill wear it inside out. during the day ill wear camo shorts, got a bunch of pairs, all prints. if its night ill wear fitted jeans, usually dark raw/untreated denim, dark wash only, i said fitted, not skinny, im a big dude, cant do that shit, by fitted i mean jeans that fit me, tapered leg, no boot/flare/wide leg. and of course a fitted hat and sneakers. To go out i usually always wear a light jacket/windbreaker/denim jacket. a gingham print button downs, or an oxford shirt (light blue, grey or red). i been wearing alot of chambray/denim-ish shirts. been feeling those alot..Ive come to realized  i mainly wear blue and grey shirts. all with a pair of chucks or what some call "dress sneakers" all black shoes with a white vulcanized soul. i use to wear alot of flannels and plaid shirts, but that caught on, so i kind of stopped. i remember some guys asking me why i was dressed like a lumber jack, few month later they caught on...

Who's your Celebrity Style Doppelganger?

since i have so many influences its kind of had to just name one person. I'll just name a few people that I feel very influenced by: Kanye West, Wale, David Beckham, Diddy,  DJ Vice, Justin Timberlake, Kid Cudi, John Mayer, Duck Sauce (Armand Van Helden and A-trak), TI, Yelawolf. All these people are very unique in their own kind of way. Some of their outfits are way off lol, but for the most part they have their own style and ways. Kanye has been WAY ahead of the curve, from his days of pastel colored polos, to his Givenchy outfit hes been wearing on stage during the Watch the Throne tour.

What do you think about fashion in Nicaragua?

(for the most part) it sucks and its horrible. SHEEP. Nicaragua has a horrible sense of style. I'm talking about your average Nicaraguan. They follow the worst trends and get stuck in them. Its a horrible snowball effect. Its all about approval from the right people. Its like a time capsule, some things never change. Last few times i went I saw how much people love Hollister (even HolliSTAR, the bootleg version), Aeropostale, American Eagle and Abercrombie. The shredded letters that look like they're falling off, pink/baby blue/green and white stripped polo, super faded flared/boot cut jeans, and (THE WORSE) white TICA TAC shoes. cmon. I'm not gonna lie, i had a pair of white shoes(and belt) in like 04-05, when white stripes came out, and the hipster look started coming around, wore them a few times. then got rid of them. but in Nica they are HOTTT!!!! if not those white Pumas/Lacoste shoes with the velcro strap. horrible. Now the whole polo/rugby shirt with the number on the sleve, big polo logo, etc are in. I had one of those in 06, i wore it a lot, even wore it to Nica once and i remember the looks/comments i got "DUDE is that real? why is the logo so big? "uyyy de donde sacastes esa camisa" but hey, i guess they're cool now. oh well...

At the same time, I see a lot of older women (40+) dressed very well. I see pictures of formal events and galas, and women are dressed in very nice dresses and tops. Alot of them made by seamstresses from magazine cut outs or influenced by stuff seen in "Hola!". I notice this because my Mom is someone who's fashion sense has always been on point. from her outfits, to her accessories and just overall fashion sense.

What labels, brands or designers do you usually go for?

I would say Nike and New Era (fitted hats) is pretty much it. Everything else it depends. There's always a name brand items i might be interested in, with enough digging and looking i can find something along the lines of it, but for a reasonable price. To me its not the price on a piece of clothing, but the value you give to it.

As far as Nike and New Era goes, thats a different story. If i see a pair of shoes i like, ill buy them, no matter what. Same for a fitted hat. I have probably owned over 75+ fitted hats, some I wear till they loose the shape and have to get rid of them, it sucks when its a limited hat that i just cant buy at a store. Ive lost count of the amount of sneakers I have, somewhere over 100 i would say. Mostly Nike and Jordan, being a Nike employee helps, lol.

What does the word fashion mean to you?

fashion is what you make of it, how you grab the ordinary and make it your own. your originality and way of being. usually goes with the times or far from it.

Is there something in particular that influences your style?

music. i been djing for almost 10 years, and music has to be the number one thing that influences who i am. most of the people i named are musicians of some sort. i guess the music i listen to has influenced my ways in one way or another. At the same time, it has thrown people off, when I show up to a hiphop gig wearing a Metallica tshirt, i get looks like "oh shit", but when i go on all that goes out the window.

How important is your sense of style at work?

I think its very important, specially being a dj. You always judge a book by its cover, like it or not, its just a human instinct. I always stay on it when i'm djing. Since i am working i'm always wearing sneakers, its whats comfortable, since i'm going to be on my feet for at least 4 hours. Its the appearance that you give out. If i look super corny with a too tight Hollister shirt on, people are gonna look at me and be like "uhhmmmmm" who is this guy? so i just stay chill with a well put together outfit.

What are the Biggest 'Fashion Faux Pas' you just always find yourself "SMH"?

I would have to say that my biggest fashion dont is being a SHEEP, doing something because everyone is, not because you want to. Going back to everything i said about Nicaragua. I think thats my main concern. I personally dont have anythign against hollister or any of those brands, in fact i own a pair of basketball shorts from there, but you dont see me praising the brand with every outfit that i wear. Another thing i SMH about is dressing accordingly to your size. I'm a bigger guy, not always use to be my size, but when i gained some weight, i altered the way i dressed. If you feel/look uncomfortable wearing something, dont wear it. I HAAAAAAAAATE seeing fat people wearing things that dont fit them, specially fat girls. I seen some very well put together bigger girls, because they dress to their size, thats what matters in the end.
