NewsWorthy: Nicaragua Diseña 2013

i gotta give it to my assistant last year, Andrea. working ND really does kick your ass and we are at 3 weeks from the event. from press release writing, casting models, tv interviews, designer meetings, updating social media, answering 200 emails a day from prospective models, artists, sponsors - all while making sure my other clients and main boss, Shantall are also being taken care of.

still don't know what Nicaragua Diseña is? in short, it is a design incubator sponsored by the Nicaraguan Tourism Board (INTUR) that showcases emerging designers. The Shantall Lacayo team works along INTUR as consultants.

how does it work? it's a mix of CFDA Fashion Fund except we don't give awards or 100K - Trade Shows except you don't pay for an exhibition space - and MILK MADE NYC, you don't pay for runway, beauty, model production and at the end of the day it all starts with a designer application. Creative Artists (fashion, photographers, architects, culinary, interior design, accessories, innovative objects, etc etc) send their portfolios and the ND team selects the most innovative and fresh talent in Nicaragua. Not only can Nicaraguans apply but Nicaraguan residents as well.

last year, I worked ND12 (pilot event) from NYC but this year, I decided to come back home since it was such a hit and an incredible experience.

so far, the highlight of ND13 has been calling the applicants and telling them they were selected. their happiness melted my heart.

don't miss Nicaragua Diseña 2013 this Saturday, August 3rd and Sunday, 4th!

Street Style: Fashion Night Out NYC

i usually blog immediately. these FNO pics are way past due. oops. but hey, i am no paid full-time blogger. anyways, here are a few street style pics i shot around Chelsea and Meatpacking. my friends and i tried to go to DVF but there was a 30-40 min waiting line. uhmm, no thanks. so we walked around and enjoyed a few drinks at scoop and The Standard Biergarten. FNO was legit crazy. last time and first time i went was when i first moved to NYC and immediately feel in love with Manhattan. i walked all of the 5th and waited in the Bergdorf Goodman line. FNO is a night to dress up, walk around, check out spectacular outfits with a drink in hand and a great group of friends.

“Good Taste/Bad Taste” at the MET

 #SUNDAYFUNDAY at the MET

Iris Apfel and Tavi Gevinson at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a little panel about
“Good Taste/Bad Taste: The Evolution of Contemporary Chic”.

it was ok. i expected it to be a little better. Apfel was quite funny and Tavi captivated the audience with her eloquence.
i didn't like how the audience didn't have an open mic in order to ask questions, instead we had to gather around the stage like "zopilotes"
(Nicaraguan Spanish for vultures).

after the panel, I finally visited the “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” exhibit.
it was revolutionary, rebellious, surreal, and free. i am a fan of Miuccia's work, ideals and thoughts but identified with Schiaparelli's designs. I am 'Waist Up' .

"I try to make women feel more powerful without losing their femininity" - Miuccia Prada

"While the waist down is more basic, more grounded, its' about sex. it's about making love. it's about life. it's about giving birth" - Miuccia Prada

"Many men admire strong women, but they do not love them" - Elsa Schiaparelli

Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations was organized by Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton, The Costume Institute

Conceived, Produced and Directed by Baz Luhrmann

July Moodboard

I know its a bit early for a moodboard but the colors are basically July in New York City. Living in NY is hard but it has made me a patient person - just by walking down the streets and making my way through Times Square without being pushed around - I try to remember to keep holding my head up in order to make my way through the business of fashion and one day succeed at it. Walking through the crowds gives me the chance to daydream about life, work, love, food, beauty and fashion. and lately, I've been doing while playing "Moment For Life" by Nicki Minaj non-stop...

" This is my moment, I waited all my life I can tell its time
drifting away I'm one with the sunsets, I have become alive. "

and I can't help but to think it's all amazing. I'm starting to think July is one of my favorite months because around this time last year, I was watching one of the most beautiful sunsets in Ibiza and felt like something great was coming my way and that's exactly when NY happened. I can't wait to see what my future holds.
