True Life: Miami PR Girl

don't even look at the date of my last post. i know it's been crazy. i moved to miami mid-january and it's already july (ahem) #MBFWSwim Week 2014 to be exact. so i will take a little lunch break and write a little update post on my PR life to talk to you my interview process and a little about what i am doing now.

back in january i noticed some pretty good job opportunities on linkedin and mediabistro. however, unlike NY, Miami would offer 2 new job opportunities per week compared to NY's 20-40 per week. i also noticed none of these fashion/lifestyle pr agencies post their job opportunities on these sites but on their facebook fan pages. in that case, i called them all to ask for the right HR contact to send my resume to and emailed them all immediately. thanks to NY, my internships and freelance clients - my resume is not too shabby and within my 1st week of being in miami, i had 8 interviews lined up.

long story short, i was able to secure freelance work with 2 pr agencies and my previously NY agency allowed me to work with them remotely for a few weeks. all was working out perfectly meanwhile i interviewed for the 'perfect full-time' job.

so what happened? after numerous interviews i was turned down for 'too much fashion' or because they were a 45-1 hour commute and wanted someone closer to the office.

right before my current job. i gave a random pr firm a chance. it worked out for 1 day. the owner, offered me the job on the spot and they were only my 3rd interview. and i declined. a month later, i was still looking and she called back again with the offer. since i hadn't found the 'perfect full-time' opportunity, i decided to give them a chance. why was i so hesitant? 1. it was only my 3rd interview 2. i found a rip-off report 3. a couple contacts told me not to work for them. 4. my gut kept saying NO! (you have to follow that gut feeling!) that one day, i 'worked' was a complete shit storm. whoa! never ever did i experience such terrible vibes, presentation, ambiance and much more. and i don't need that in my life and for my pr rep. before i left that day, i asked the team if it was like that everyday and they just looked away...it was very sad. i'll spare the details and would just like to say: no good pr person should work there. i wouldn't even recommend this agency to my worst enemy.

thank God, the day before this, I went on an interview with a beauty school. after 4 interviews, i've been chilling as their new pr, social media and events coordinator. i'm happy, work with an amazing events team, great schedule and fun events.

now i must go...my hair & makeup team and i will be killing #MBFWSwim and tonight is our first event with Miami Magazine .... yeppp, not too shabby.

Good Luck to all the Miami PR girls in the making!

Links I Love: Miami Bloggers

new city, means new media contacts to a pr girl - more than ever have I been getting familiar with the local news desk producers, magazines, editors, reporters, and above all  - the food, event and fashion blogs. I'm definitely a blogger girl as most bloggers tend to review items, events and restaurants you might have never heard of. I even won a valentine's day giveaway from The Architect of Style on The Wordy Girl and experience food through Fat Girl Hedonist's instagram.

So here is a list of my favorite local blogs, sites, igs:

Everything Going On In Miami - THE 305
(music, gossip, events, fashion, sports - i mean, EVERY-THING! about miami life)

Fashion Blog - NANY'S CLOSET
(my absolute favorite miami fashion blogger. not only do i go their for style ideas but i've ombred my hair bc of her videos. in addition, it is the BEST looking blog - aesthetically speaking)

Miami Deals - GILT CITY MIAMI
(the last PR firm I worked with, ran a food & wine coupon here and since then, I've missed the opportunity to buy coupons to miami style mafia and and international polo club palm beach - so move fast!)

Fashion Blog - THE ARCHITECT OF STYLE
(i used to have 2 blogs but eventually combined both of the blogspots. when i was trying to figure out a name for one of them it was something along the lines of "Architect Stalker" - i don't even remember, i was never too fond of the name. BUT i am fond of this blog, it's also where i won my illustration from. she covers fashion, home decor and definitely check out her illustrations)

Places - MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT
(I prefer their IG - I found their website as the last food & wine event I worked was hosted at the Moore Building)

Fashion Blog - THE WORDY GIRL
(yet another accomplished social media maven. i actually read her blog, it's real and funny)

Places - TRENDY SPOTS MIAMI
(I discovered them on Latina stylist, Irma Martinez's IG. I'm getting to know a lil Miami dets and new lifestyle spots)

Fashion Blog - OJ AND CIGS
(stylist, former new york, and former DJ - hip)

Fashion Stylist - IRMA MARTINEZ
(constantly traveling but Miami based stylist, Irma is a must-IG-follow)

Store - MIAMI STYLE MAFIA
(They don't update their Facebook, so follow up their IG. i don't remember how i first found out about them but it was way before all their press. i think they posted an internship opportunity and thought their showroom/store/pieces and general concept was dope and an upgrade for the miami girl's closet)

Fashion Blog - LIVING IN COLOR PRINT
(runner-up on my fashion blog favorites and a pr girl as well)

Food - FAT GIRL HEDONIST
(again, i found this blog when i was researching special guests for the food & wine event i worked. i highly recommend her IG)

Fashion Blog - ELECTRIC BLOGARELLA
(if i could my list would include Daily Candy Miami - and this blogger was one of the main editors. RIP DC. but her blog is pretty good as well)

Networking - MIAMI MEDIA MIXER
(my best guy friend sent me the invite to their last networking event at batch. and since then, have told everyone about it. perfect social events to meet people in the industry.)

Fashion Blog - THE FASHION POET
(voted Miami's fashion blogger for 2013. not only does she dress herself but she has the cutest kid model. perfect! now i know where to shop for my unborn miami girl)

Store - BLUSH BOUTIQUE
(just noticed some of these bloggers have been dressing a tiger dress from this miami store. good thing, they are literally around the corner from me bc I never have anything to wear ;) locations: palmetto, brickell, south miami, miami beach, etc)

Fashion Blog - COLLECTIONS AND VOLUMES
(i literally just found this blog. obsessed.)

Event: The Wynwood Walls - Art Walk

It's been 2 months since I last blogged - ouch! So I have officially moved to Miami and have been busy with temp clients, getting situated to the new city (specially the highways), finding an apartment, shopping for a car (which I've never done), flying to NY for Shantall Lacayo's Capsule show, and finding that dream F/T PR job. But like everyone else, I'm constantly snapping pics of where I'm going and who I'm with.

So let's talk about one of those places. Now that I'm actually living in Miami, I must stop with the ceremonious medianoches, croquetas, and Dadeland shopping. Time to discover Miami!

Therefore, since I'm heading to Art Walk this weekend. Let me tell you a little about it since I was there for the 1st time, last month. Art Walk takes places at Wynwood, which is located in Miami's Design District between North Miami and NW 2nd Avenues, from about 20th Street up to 36th Street. I'd say up-and-coming neighborhood but I'm pretty sure, this neighborhood has already made it's statement with loads of press and crowds.

Wynwood to Miami, is like Williamsburg to Manhattan - nonchalant artsy crowd and ambiance. All you wanna do, is chill with a Stella in one hand, groove to old school hip-hop music while playing giant Jenga without dropping your $1 taco before moving onto the next bar patio on your skateboard. My kind of perfect! Cause at my age, I don't think I keep dressing like a Miami version of Kim Kardashian and partying like Kanye at LIV.

So what is Art Walk? Every second Saturday of every month, from 7pm - 10 pm - Wynwood's art spaces, art galleries, bars, lounges, walls, and community hosts a night to draw in crowds to network, enjoy, and appreciate street art, graffiti, curators, and projects from all around the world - USA, Greece, Portugal, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, etc etc...

Must See:

Bars (I've been to & recommend):
Wood Tavern
Cafeina
Gramps
Electric Pickle

So what do you think? Art Basel isn't the only art affair in Miami.
See you around this Saturday, March 10th! ;)

My Top 5: 2013 Moments

Top 5: Nicaragua Diseña 2013

so much work, drama, talent, and fun. one of my favorite projects and a growing design incubator that will surely keep getting bigger and better each year.
Top 4: Shantall Lacayo

this year we participated in events and meetings in Panama, Dominican Republic, New York, Mexico and obviously Nicaragua. it will take many more years to get to where we want to go...we are constantly inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's insatiable drive of ever changing work and in my case, women like Jenna Lyons and Aliza Licht inspire me to stay focused.

Top 3: Pre-Fall 2014 - Chanel

Honestly, I don't understand the negative hoopla around this collection. I don't identify myself as a potential Chanel customer but I appreciate the Cowboy/Indian inspiration and their outrageous set. I'm sure I can find a budget friendly high neck prairie blouse somewhere...

Top 2: Queen B

All hail 'Yonce and her dope album.
'Nuf said.

TOP 1: Me, Myself, and I

Despite losing my best friend to a drunk driver in New York in July. I returned to NY with a heavy heart in August after ND13 for SL's first NY show. While my bff's mom and brother wished me well, they also wished me safety. I was afraid and felt alone. But I kept my head up and worked hard - because I know she would have wanted that. She never wanted me to give up - more over, be happy. And NY in some twisted way made me happy. The hustle & lights motivate me to keep going and shine on - from the quick steps New Yorkers take everyday to and from work in chilling weather, to running along the Hudson and leaving it all behind for a drink or two at happy hour at the irish pub next to the office building. I have no doubt I'm built to make it in NY but I can't stop to think, Family First. Although, I was offered a temp job late Sept. and was given the chance to experience food, wine and spirits public relations - I'll be taking my talents to South Beach to be closer to home & family. I live and love my life but I love my family even more. 2013 gave me strength .... I wonder what I'll get in 2014.

Resort 2014: Emilio Pucci

"If it didn't look good with a flat shoe, it didn't go in the collection. And no checked-in baggage, either. It's got to fit into a carry-on, even evening dresses." - Peter Dundas

This may be the perfect Resort 2014 collection. Now that I'm heading to Miami for Independence weekend, these are the exact bold and beach ready looks I wanna go for. strong bright mosaic prints for day and night. edgy yet relaxed. all i'm missing is my mojito. see you soon Miami.

Inspiring: Resort 2013

BCBG Max Azria | Resort 2013
Azria's inspiration embodies the cultures India to Peru for the Tuscan jetsetter's of Hotel Il Pellicano through kimono-style dresses. A definite must have style for a true beach jetsetter.

BCBG Max Azria | Resort 2013

Balmain | Resort 2013
Balmain's Olivier Rousteing was inspired by Miami. Not only by the South Beach colors (yellow, peach, and mint) but by the Latin culture that makes Miami, "el pequeño latinoamerica".

"I'm mixed race, too,"

"so it was beautiful to see the connection between Cuba and the U.S. there."

"Fun, happiness, and hope"

Just Cavalli | Resort 2013
Cavalli was inspired by India, hip-hop culture and the Garden of Eden - accented with his signature animal prints.

Just Cavalli | Resort 2013

The following looks are just a few looks that are bound to inspire my holiday looks while out in Miami and the Caribbean. However, I am set to wear a black pantsuit/romper/overall look. I'm aiming towards a sleek chic look to ring in the the new year.

Style Stalker : The Promoter

i met him on the dancefloor about 8 years ago wearing a light pink headband, striped grey, white, and pink shirt, and dark denim urban fitted jeans EXACTLY - i can tell you this because i have 2 shots from 2night.com Nicaragua flashing pics of our remarkable moves that set off a riot at the club. i had no idea who he was but i can tell you his unique sense of style definitely caught my eye and since then he's never ceased to amaze me. meet my friend Christian and get to know his fashionista side.

Describe your style:
I think my style could best be described as urban-chic. I had some trouble coming up with a term that could describe my style, seeing as my style is a combination of urban flair such as high top sneakers, fitted dark denim jeans and a touch of prep/trend/chic because i always try to accessorize a regular shirt with either a skinny tie, sweater, or scarf.

Who's your celebrity style doppelganger?
I would have to say Kanye West, Pharrel Williams, and Justin Timberlake.

What do you think about fashion in Nicaragua?

I personally have always had an issue with fashion in Nicaragua, because of the fact that i believe they are very few people that have "style". By style i mean the courage and personality to dress how they like, instead of dressing how you are "suppose" to dress.

For guys you can almost have a Nica guy uniform, it would basically be comprised of A&F jeans, Express button down (tucked in of course), Puma/firestone sneakers, or Ferragamo leather moccasin loafers. For women, i feel as if they are starting to venture away from the jeans for all occasions and at all time fad.

What labels, brands or designers do you usually go for?

In regards to brands, i like Zara, Kid Robot, BAPE, Rock N Republic.

What does the word fashion mean to you?

Fashion for me has always been the language or expression of someones personality, u dress how you feel. There is no right or wrong when it comes to fashion.

Fashion can sometimes be a funny thing, to quote
Oscar Wilde "Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to change it every 6 months."

Is there something in particular that influences your style?

I think Music has a huge influence in my style.

How important is your sense of style at work?

I think it plays an important role, i once heard that you should dress for the position you want, not the position you have. For example if you want to be a CEO, dress the part always look good, and clean.

What are the biggest 'fashion faux pas' you just always find yourself "SMH"?

I cant stand when people buy clothes just because its "in" or "trendy" without taking into account if they can pull off that look, or even fit in the clothes. Nothing beats feeling comfortable in what u are wearing.

Summer 2011 Style Guide & Destinations

A style guide influenced by my mini vacation to Florida and Nicaragua. While in Florida, I spent one of my nights out on the hot Miami Beach...an Erick Morillo - Defected TV video said it best "What do you love  about Miami? All the hot asses, all the hot asses everywhere!! .... Miami is the sexiest!!"

I usually spend just 2 nights in Miami and it always leaves me wanting more ... more music, more beach, more sexy outfits, more life!

Now Miami isn't as trendy or fashion forward...however, I believe they have their unique style which can only be referred to sensual seduction. You have to embrace looking good while drops of sweat are sliding down your face, arms, and belly...let me just say it is a true talent to control the hair frizz under that humid weather year round!

My South Beach muses are Karolina Kurkova & Bar Rafaeli.

As for the second part of my early summer trip to Nicaragua - I found myself almost heading to Corn Island on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua (I still haven't been!) with best friend and her boyfriend but decided not be the third wheel hahahha ... however, as you can see you'll know why I really want to go someday. It's simply breathtaking! Definitely a place to go with a significant other and a HOT-ASS bikini! Just like black strappy one from the S'S 11 Mara Hoffman collection. Unlike Miami and it's short shorts..I decided to go with an ISSA crochet dress...I mean look at all these colors! They are magnificient for a walk on the beach and romantic dinner by the beach.

My Corn Island muse is Spanish actress, Elsa Pataky.

Two very different styles, but two very aphrodisiac destinations.
