I Want: À-la-Mexique by Spenglish

woooops it's been over a month. what can i say kids, i'm busy from 9-5, 5 days a week, and all i want to do when i get home is watch some good ol' tv. i'm probably talking to myself at this point but i saw this on Vogue Mexico's twitter yesterday and decided to post it on my blog.

get to know: À-la-Mexique

if it wasn't funny enough in english - here it is in spanish.

" À-la-Mexique " is a limited edition collaboration by Gabriel Rivera-Barranza ( a fashion and communications consultant in NY ) and t-shirt brand, Spenglish. the 4 t-shirt collection is made of the best and softest cotton, pima cotton and are priced at $50.

thinking about it..i think Shantall Lacayo met this guy and told me about his project.

cause since YSL dropped the SL i've been trying to get Shantall to do a Y Shantall Lacayo? t-shirt. ha! i guess he beat all the latinos to the punch.

so who's your alter ego? are you Coco Canales, Isidro San Lorenzo, Juan Pablo Gutiérrez or Alejando McReina?

the cool thing about this collaboration is that 10% of each t-shirt sold will benefit Project Paz, an initiative to promote peace in the city of Juárez.

Places: MET Museum: Punk: Chaos to Couture

Sunday Funday at the MET with Shantall and Nazira. Although we got there at 4:30 (MET closes at 5:30 on Sundays) we were able to enjoy the short exhibition. Compared to the Prada / Schararelli and McQueen exhibit this one had few captions, therefore we were able to enjoy it at a faster pace and in 45 minutes. The Prada / Schararelli and McQueen exhibits took me 2 hours to complete. Punk: Chaos to Couture boasted Vivienne Westwood, McQueen, Givenchy, Gianni Versace, Yohi Yamamoto and Maison Martin Margiela to name a few. My favorite hallway was definitely the 'Hardware' hall featuring Dolce and Gabbana and Gianni Versace.

The Met's spring 2013 Costume Institute exhibition, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, will examine punk's impact on high fashion from the movement's birth in the early 1970s through its continuing influence today. Featuring approximately one hundred designs for men and women, the exhibition will include original punk garments and recent, directional fashion to illustrate how haute couture and ready-to-wear borrow punk's visual symbols. In My Closet: Skull Inspired

this girl just keeps getting better and better! accessories designer/dentist (yes! dentist!), Karla Castillo is my favorite Nicaraguan accessories designer. in the last month, she presented a trunk show along with Nicaraguan RTW designer, Marynes Arguello in Miami and is hoping to follow up with a trunk show in late April in Nicaragua. every time we meet she reminds on how tough it is for the Nicaraguan market to accept skulls into their wardrobe and constantly receives special requests to remove them for stones or flowers. however, Castillo does not back down and continues to promote calaverismo (spanish for "skull-ism") along with stylist, Mariu Lacayo

you might believe, skull inspired fashion became trendy once you started watching Keeping Up with the Kardashian's and noticed mama Kris wear a different colored Alexander McQueen skull scarf in every episode but if we trace skull use, it can go back to the 16th century; artists like Albrecht Dürer used skulls to remind people of their mortality. however it was the Mexican art of smiling, dancing skulls, used to celebrate Dia de los Muertos (spanish for "Day of the Dead"), which helped skulls become more widely accepted. Eventually, the skull became an icon in 1970s London counterculture, where Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood launched a series of skull-inspired punk gear.

so get over it, it's a skull. it doesn't mean you're a pirate, witch, tarot card reader or a character from a Tim Burton movie. it's merely a symbol that represents to most mortality and music.
